The Touch of the Master's Hand

Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer
thought it scarcely worth his while to waste much time on the old violin,
but held it up with a smile; "What am I bidden, good folks," he cried,
"Who'll start the bidding for me?" "A dollar, a dollar"; then two!" "Only
two? Two dollars, and who'll make it three? Three dollars, once; three
dollars twice; going for three.." But no, from the room, far back, a
gray-haired man came forward and picked up the bow; Then, wiping the dust
from the old violin, and tightening the loose strings, he played a melody
pure and sweet as caroling angel sings.

The music ceased, and the auctioneer, with a voice that was quiet and low,
said; "What am I bid for the old violin?" And he held it up with the bow.
A thousand dollars, and who'll make it two? Two thousand! And who'll make
it three? Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice, and going and
gone," said he. The people cheered, but some of them cried, "We do not
quite understand what changed its worth." Swift came the reply: "The touch
of a master's hand."

And many a man with life out of tune, and battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd, much like the old violin, A
"mess of pottage," a glass of wine; a game - and he travels on. "He is
going" once, and "going twice, He's going and almost gone." But the Master
comes, and the foolish crowd never can quite understand the worth of a soul
and the change that's wrought by the touch of the Master's hand.

Quote

“It was meant to be that life would be a challenge.
To suffer some anxiety, some depression,
some disappointment,
even some failure is normal.
Teach our members that if they have a good,
miserable day once in a while,
or several in a row,
to stand steady and face them.
Things will straighten out.
There is great purpose in our struggle in life”
-- President Boyd K. Packer, (That All May Be Edified [1982], p. 94).

The Rockets' Red Glare,

the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thru the night that our flag was still there.
Oh say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"*

Yesterday in church we sang this song as our closing hymn.  Just listening to the prelude glistened my eyes with the gratitude I have for this country; those who paved the way; and for my blessing to practice my religion.

Singing the Star Spangled Banner in church is such a spiritually charged patriotic and sacred blessing.

"And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust!'"*

My Mission--July 2014

Not every day is a day at the Library!
In addition to working at the Library, we also have devotionals at the Joseph Smith Building and we have Department meetings at the Conference Center.  Here are some pictures I snapped in May when we had our Department Meeting with Elder Quentin L. Cook.

Beautiful Women: Part I

I say we just cancel winter!

There are no flowers.

It is dark and dreary.

The wind is harsh.

Winter is lonely and bleak.
And chilling.

It seems like such an unnecessary season, just so we can get to that great anticipated S*P*R*I*N*G!

Just by saying the two words;
S*P*R*I*N*G
and
w-i-n-t-e-r

there is a drastic difference!

However, when thoughts of "no winter" enter my mind I know I would miss bundling up in a heavy quilt in the early dark evening for a good movie!
Eating hot soup and bread, that warms you from the inside out!
I would miss the fresh snow covered pines and the quietness absorbed by the blanket of flakes.
I would miss shoveling the snow,
and even that ever slow slide across snow-packed roads as you creep along with your foot on the brake.
I would miss the “winter” holidays, and that extra time I get to spend with my family!

Maybe cancelling winter isn’t such a prudent thing to do; after all, winter is the season of hibernation and rest in nature.

Winter is, in its own way, beautiful!

I believe the same is true for growing old!
We shouldn’t cancel it, like Hollywood and society try to do. With their plastic surgery, face creams, fad diets and other demeaning and fashionsble ideas.

Age is beautiful!

It is necessary!

Some quotes to think about:

“While Satan may be attacking the sisters at earlier ages, the Lord is lifting sisters to higher and higher levels of spirituality.”(1)

“The adversary would have us be critical or judgmental of one another.  He wants us to concentrate on our differences and compare ourselves to one another.”(2)

“We as women can be particularly hard on ourselves.  When we compare ourselves to one another, we will always feel inadequate or resentful of other.”(2)

“We must stop concentrating on our difference and look for what we have in common; then we can begin to realize our greatest potential and achieve the greatest good in this world.”  (2)

“If there are barriers, it is because we ourselves have created them.  We must stop concentrating on our differences and look for what we have in common; then we can begin to realize our greatest potential and achieve the greatest good in this world.”(3)

After all, winter can be beautiful!

Beautiful Women: Part II

We are created in God’s image.

We are unique for a reason.
We look different for a reason.

When you look in the mirror love yourself and see yourself with eternal eyes!

“As women of all ages, we walk in His light.  Our journey on the path is personal and well lit with the Savior’s love.” (1)

“Jesus called him to become a part of His work-the work of a disciple.  Our work is the   We are to ‘lay aside the things of [the] world,…cleave unto [our] covenants,’ and come unto Christ and follow Him.  That’s what disciples do!”(2)
same.

“I invite you to not only love each other more but love each other better.” As quoted(4)

 We are beautiful!

Beautiful Women: Part III

These girls their joy, happiness, innocence, and self-confidence of who they are and what they want, will soon enough be replaced with feelings doubt and inadequacy.
Can you imagine looking at these beautiful girls and knowing that society will not treasure who they will become as they grow older and wiser?

It breaks my heart.
It makes me cry.
It saddens my soul.

Society and Hollywood will tell them in pictures, words, movies, songs and in social media that they aren’t this or that. . .

Why do we as women do that?
Why do we as women allow that to be done to our daughters?
Why do we do it to ourselves?
What is wrong with us?

We MUST embrace each of our seasons and we MUST teach our daughters to embrace each season, because we are destroying the hearts and thoughts of many beautiful women!

We are beautiful women

with beautiful talents and a beautiful plan.

Beautiful Women: Part IV

The beautiful women in my life:

Noble
Grandmothers,
Mothers,
Daughters,
      Wives,
      Friends,
      Examples,
      Daughters of God.

“Your feelings of kindness and forgiveness toward others come as your divine inheritance from Him as His daughter.  Each person you meet is His loved spiritual child“(1)

“..you can gain the same ability to enrich your marriage and the capacity to raise noble children by following the examples of great women.” (1)

“We have been blessed with tender and charitable natures which enable us to render Christlike love and service to those around us.”(3)

“To be sisters implies that there is an unbreakable bond between us.  Sisters take care of each other, watch out for each other, comfort each other, and are there for each other through thick and thin.”(2)
